CCCC 84. Che cosa significa il titolo «Signore»?

Nella Bibbia, questo titolo designa abitualmente Dio Sovrano. Gesù lo attribuisce a se stesso e rivela la sua sovranità divina mediante il suo potere sulla natura, sui demoni, sul peccato e sulla morte, soprattutto con la sua Risurrezione. Le prime confessioni cristiane proclamano che la potenza, l'onore e la gloria dovuti a Dio Padre sono propri anche di Gesù: Dio «gli ha dato il Nome che è al di sopra di ogni altro nome» (Fil 2,9).

Egli è il Signore del mondo e della storia, il solo a cui l'uomo debba sottomettere interamente la propria libertà personale.

Dans la Bible, ce titre désigne d’ordinaire le Dieu souverain. Jésus se l’attribue et révèle sa souveraineté divine par son pouvoir sur la nature, sur les démons, sur le péché et sur la mort, et surtout par sa résurrection. Les premières confessions chrétiennes proclament que la puissance, l’honneur et la gloire rendus à Dieu le Père le sont aussi à Jésus, à qui Dieu « a donné un nom au-dessus de tout autre nom » (Ph 2,9). Il est le Seigneur du monde et de l’histoire, le seul auquel l’homme doit soumettre totalement sa liberté personnelle.

In the Bible this title regularly designates God as Sovereign. Jesus ascribed this title to himself and revealed his divine sovereignty by his power over nature, over demons, over sin, and over death, above all by his own Resurrection. The first Christian creeds proclaimed that the power, the honor, and the glory that are due to God the Father also belong to Jesus: God “has given him the name which is above every other name” (Philippians 2:9). He is the Lord of the world and of history, the only One to whom we must completely submit our personal freedom.
