57. Se Dio è onnipotente e provvidente, perché allora esiste il male?

A questo interrogativo, tanto doloroso quanto misterioso, può dare risposta soltanto l'insieme della fede cristiana. Dio non è in alcun modo, né direttamente né indirettamente, la causa del male. Egli illumina il mistero del male nel suo Figlio, Gesù Cristo, che è morto e risorto per vincere quel grande male morale, che è il peccato degli uomini e che è la radice degli altri mali.

Seul l’ensemble de la foi chrétienne peut donner réponse à cette question, à la fois douloureuse et mystérieuse. En aucune manière, Dieu n’est la cause du mal, ni directement, ni indirectement. Il éclaire le mystère du mal par son Fils Jésus Christ, mort et ressuscité pour vaincre le grand mal moral qu’est le péché des hommes, racine des autres maux.

57. If God is omnipotent and provident, why then does evil exist?

To this question, as painful and mysterious as it is, only the whole of Christian faith can constitute a response. God is not in any way - directly or indirectly - the cause of evil. He illuminates the mystery of evil in his Son Jesus Christ who died and rose in order to vanquish that great moral evil, human sin, which is at the root of all other evils.
