CCCC 212. In che cosa consiste l'inferno?

Consiste nella dannazione eterna di quanti muoiono per libera scelta in peccato mortale. La pena principale dell'inferno sta nella separazione eterna da Dio, nel quale unicamente l'uomo ha la vita e la felicità, per le quali è stato creato e alle quali aspira. Cristo esprime questa realtà con le parole: «Via, lontano da me, maledetti, nel fuoco eterno» (Mt 25,41).

Il consiste dans la damnation éternelle de ceux qui, par libre choix, meurent en état de péché mortel. La peine principale de l’enfer est la séparation éternelle de Dieu. C’est en Dieu seul que l’homme possède la vie et le bonheur pour lesquels il a été créé et auxquels il aspire. Le Christ exprime cette réalité par ces mots : « Allez-vous-en loin de moi, maudits, dans le feu éternel » (Mt 25,41).

Hell consists in the eternal damnation of those who die in mortal sin through their own free choice. The principal suffering of hell is eternal separation from God in whom alone we can have the life and happiness for which we were created and for which we long. Christ proclaimed this reality with the words, “Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire” (Matthew 25:41).
