CCCC 50. Che cosa significa che Dio è onnipotente?

Dio si è rivelato come «il Forte, il Potente» (Sal 24,8), colui al quale «nulla è impossibile» (Lc 1,37). La sua onnipotenza è universale, misteriosa, e si manifesta nel creare il mondo dal nulla e l'uomo per amore, ma soprattutto nell'Incarnazione e nella Risurrezione del Suo Figlio, nel dono dell'adozione filiale e nel perdono dei peccati. Per questo la Chiesa rivolge la sua preghiera al «Dio onnipotente ed eterno» («Omnipotens sempiterns Deus... »).

Dieu s’est révélé comme « le fort, le vaillant » (Ps 23 [24],8), celui auquel « rien n’est impossible » (Lc 1,37). Sa toute-puissance est universelle, mystérieuse. Elle se manifeste dans le fait de créer le monde à partir de rien et l’homme par amour, mais surtout dans l’Incarnation et la Résurrection de son Fils, dans le don de l’adoption filiale et le pardon des péchés. C’est pourquoi l’Église adresse sa prière au « Dieu tout-puissant et éternel » (« Omnipotens sempiterne Deus… »).

God reveals himself as “the strong One, the mighty One” (Psalm 24:8), as the One “to whom nothing is impossible” (Luke 1:37). His omnipotence is universal, mysterious and shows itself in the creation of the world out of nothing and humanity out of love; but above all it shows itself in the Incarnation and the Resurrection of his Son, in the gift of filial adoption and in the forgiveness of sins. For this reason, the Church directs her prayers to the “almighty and eternal God” (“Omnipotens sempiterne Deus...”).
