CCCC 426. Che cos'è il merito?

Il merito è ciò che dà diritto alla ricompensa per un'azione buona. Nei confronti di Dio, l'uomo, di per sé, non può meritare nulla, avendo tutto da lui gratuitamente ricevuto. Tuttavia, Dio gli dona la possibilità di acquistare meriti per l'unione alla carità di Cristo, sorgente dei nostri meriti davanti a Dio. I meriti delle opere buone devono perciò essere attribuiti anzitutto alla grazia di Dio e poi alla libera volontà dell'uomo,

Le mérite est ce qui donne droit à la récompense pour une action bonne. Dans ses rapports avec Dieu, l’homme, de lui-même, ne peut rien mériter, ayant tout reçu gratuitement de Dieu. Néanmoins, Dieu lui donne la possibilité d’acquérir des mérites par son union à la charité du Christ, source de nos mérites devant Dieu. Les mérites des bonnes œuvres doivent donc être attribués avant tout à la grâce divine, et ensuite à la volonté libre de l’homme.

In general merit refers to the right to recompense for a good deed. With regard to God, we of ourselves are not able to merit anything, having received everything freely from him. However, God gives us the possibility of acquiring merit through union with the love of Christ, who is the source of our merits before God. The merits for good works, therefore must be attributed in the first place to the grace of God and then to the free will of man.
